GIVE GABBY THE OSCAR
Every year the Academy seems to get it wrong, don’t they? Million Dollar Baby, Crash, Denzel Washington, Renee Zelwegger, the list of undeserving winners literally goes on and on. Sadly, this Sunday will be no different according to Oscar forecasters.
Despite a brilliant debut performance, Gabrielle Sidibe is not expected to win in the Best Actress category for her fearless portrayal of young offensive tackle Michael Oher.
In The Blind Side, Sidibe turns what could have been an impossible role into one of depth and passion. Playing Oher, an overweight illiterate teen with an abundance of football talent, Sidibe steals the show from her co-star Sandra Bullock.
Bullock, who is expected to win an Academy Award for her turn as Leigh Anne Tuohy, a well-intentioned white matron who beats and berates Oher until he’s drafted by the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, has nothing but praise for her precious, young co-star.
“Gabby really inhabits the role of a 340-pound offensive tackle,” says the veteran actress. “If that’s not an Oscar-winning performance, I don’t know what is.”
“At first I was little wary that they were making a movie out of my life, but as soon as I saw Gabrielle, I knew director Lee Daniels was committed to getting my story right,” says Oher.
“It’s like I have a twin.”
But, even with all her success, Sidibe seems genuinely surprised by all the attention.
“Sure my performance as Michael Oher is brilliant, but isn’t The Blind Side a little low-brow for the Academy Awards,” she asked.
“I know there’s 10 nominated films this year, but still, only an old white woman could like The Blind Side. It’s brutal. I’ve already seen at least 50 better films this year.”
