STEVECENTRE (FRI): Mailing it in

SteveCentre should really just be called “Steve Mails It In Yet Again.” When I started this website I thought it would be fun, but lately it’s starting to feel like work. Well, without the early morning wake-up calls, deadlines, paycheques and sexual harassment charges, but still.

Like most things in my life, I’ve become bored with this blog after only three months. I know what you’re saying, “Three months? I was bored with this blog after one,” but c’mon, it was a good run while it lasted.

For now, enjoy this collage of links and half-formed opinions:

1. a) Did anyone else hear that Bill Ranford is the Kings goalie coach? That’s not all, Arturs Irbe is the Caps’ goalie coach. Not that they both didn’t have their moments, but considering their floppy styles of play I can’t think of two less qualified dudes. If I was Tim Thomas, I’d start working on my resume.

STEVECENTRE (THU): Tiger Woods is a role model

Augusta chairman Bill Payne ripped into Tiger Woods on Wednesday, saying the world’s best golfer disappointed everyone with his sex scandal.

“Our hero did not live up to the expectations of the role model we saw for our children,” said Payne . “I hope he now realizes that every kid he passes on the course wants his swing, but would settle for his smile.”

Ahh, it’s the age old debate. Should parents expect professional athletes to act as role models for their children? While this is a burden athletes don’t necessarily sign-up for — although Tiger did through his multiple endorsement deals — it’s inevitable that kids will look up to these guys. And in Tiger’s case, I think that’s a good thing.

If I had a young boy, I’d point at Woods and say,

“See son, if you work hard and become the best at what you do, you can have sex with as many beautiful women as you like. While Tiger obviously shouldn’t have got married and was wrong to disrespect his wife in that way, don’t forget the greater lesson here: No matter what field you’re in, money and success will always attract babes. Don’t be like daddy. He wasted his 20s travelling and writing silly Internet blogs when he should have been working hard on his career. Now he’s stuck having sex with just mommy.”

STEVECENTRE (WED): What does TSN have against basketball?

How great a night was it in sports? Sportscentre didn’t even bother showing highlights of the Jazz’s 140-139 overtime win versus the Thunder. I would’ve loved to hear the editorial discussion in the newsroom.

– “Hey, you want to show highlights from the best basketball game of the year?
– “Nah.”

Over the years TSN has consistently showed basketball no respect, consistently burying their short, 35-second packs near the end of the show, or in this case, not running them at all. But it’s nothing personal, it’s just business. As the most profitable television station in Canada, TSN knows that Canadians are simple people who love hockey, curling and CFL football. Want proof, check out two of Chris Zelkovich’s recent posts on his excellent Toronto Star blog: 1. Curling dominates 2. No ratings for NCAA tourney in Canada.

On Monday night, Canada’s Sports Leader didn’t show highlights of the NCAA championship game until 21 minutes into the show. Nevermind that Duke’s 61-59 victory over the Butler Bulldogs was one of the best finals in recent memory, Sportscentre’s focus remained solely on hockey.

That’s why I’m glad we have The Score. God knows they’re not perfect (horse racing and poker anyone?), but at least they have quality programs like Court Surfing. Last night I was treated to the aforementioned Jazz-Thunder game. (Read up on the game here or watch highlights below.) Deron Williams nailed the game-winner with 1.1 seconds left in overtime, going for a career-high 42 points, while Kevin Durant continued his monstrous season with 45 points, nailing three-ball after three-ball in the fourth quarter (4 of his 7 3’s in the game). Best of all, we got a classic NBA fishy finish where the official refused to call the clear foul C.J. Miles made on Durant while he attempted a game-winning 3-pointer. Disgraceful, but like TSN’s decision not to air a Jazz-Thunder highlight pack, much expected.

STEVECENTRE (week of March 16): Watching Sportscentre

For the few of you reading who don’t know, I’m an idiot.

On Friday afternoon, my girlfriend Sara and I were a leaving Costco when I noticed a delicious cantaloupe in our full cart of groceries. For no reason at all, I grabbed the cantaloupe (not to be confused with a honeydew which has light green flesh) and tossed it as high in the air as I could, thinking I would then make a glorious catch. After all, Steve Starr is nothing if not an athlete. Well, the fucking thing hit me right in the face. Came down and knocked my glasses clean off.

STEVECENTRE (wk of March 9): SteveCentre cancelled

Sighting low hit counts and threats from affiliates, The Steve Network has decided to cancel SteveCentre after only one week.

“I don’t know what we were thinking,” said Steve Network President and CEO Jeff Zucker. “Steve’s way too lazy to be counted on to post daily links.”

Calling it “the biggest blogging bomb of all-time,” Entertainment Weekly critic Ken Tucker said SteveCentre was doomed from the beginning.

“Half the stuff he posted was old news, while the other half just wasn’t that interesting,” said Tucker. “I mean, that guy’s got a serious hard-on for Letterman.”

Zucker said he hopes Steve Starr will stay on with the website, although in a reduced capacity. To fill the hole in their line-up, industry insiders are reporting that Zucker has asked Steve Network correspondent Aaron Alguire to take on a bigger role.
